“Do what you do best and outsource the rest!” says Jenn Rose, owner of J.Rose Back Office Resources, LLC.

With a 20-year career steeped in human resources and hotel management under her belt, Rose, a South Dennis resident and mother of three, said that J. Rose Back Office Resources is the “missing piece to cost-cutting strategies.”

“Any small business and solo professional can benefit from what I have to offer,” Rose said. “My services can free up time and add efficiency by unloading tasks they don’t have to worry about.”

A highly skilled remote professional, Rose tackles bookkeeping, subcontractor management, employee onboarding, administrative, and HR tasks for skilled small businesses, solo professionals, and independent contractors.

She has been helping Cape Cod entrepreneurs mind their business since 2015, and she spoke with Amplify’s Rachael Devaney. Photography by Images by Saraphina.

Amplify: What does your business have to offer?

Jenn Rose: I provide professional administrative services to small businesses and solo professionals throughout the Cape, surrounding area, Plymouth, and beyond. That’s pretty much anything from email management to creating employee handbooks, filling out forms for clients, or for independent contractor and employees. I also help daycare services update forms and parent handbooks. And I work for health and wellness entities and studios to fill out HIPAA confidentiality forms. Much of my business also revolves around trade services - so that’s plumbers, contractors, carpenters, electricians where I offer bookkeeping and payroll services.

Amplify: Why and how did you decide to start this business venture?

Jenn: While I was working in the hotel industry in human resources, I was a single parent, and I realized that having a single income wasn’t working. I started working for a contractor on the side doing his books. At the time he was doing paper invoices and contracts, so I got his business established on QuickBooks, got everything set up for him electronically and really built the back end of his business. He didn’t need to hire me full time and I wasn’t working a ton of hours, so it really worked out. After a few years, he told me I could be doing this for so many other people and they could benefit from what I had to offer. His words were the push I needed.

Amplify: Was it hard to break away from your 9 to 5 job and go out on your own?

Jenn: I was hesitant at first to go out on my own. But then I found out that what I do is like being a virtual assistant. I started researching the target areas and the target market and laying it out on paper. Initially I was overwhelmed, and the information overload was too much. But then I found Entrepreneurship for All (EforAll Cape Cod), which is an organization that offers free business classes and I said to myself, “I’m just gonna go for it.” I was accepted into the 12-week program, and EforAll ended up being an ice breaker for me. It gave me the confidence to leave my job and open my business. It was time to put my faith into my abilities and my community and just run with it.

Amplify: Did the pandemic affect your business at all?

Jenn: Although I have been offering my services independently since 2015, I wasn’t supposed to fully transition out of my day job until April of 2020. But then the pandemic hit. My boss at the time said that she didn’t think it was a good time for me to get my business up and running so she created a position for me. I stayed on site a little longer to train my replacement and help with special projects. So, in a way, the pandemic helped me develop more and execute when I was ready.

Amplify: Where do you see your business in five years?

Jenn: When I’m looking at a five-year plan, I’m honestly on the fence with some things. I obviously want my business to grow and bring staff on and offer more, but I am also okay with keeping things solo and handling the majority of tasks myself. I just want to help as many businesses as possible. And whether that will be with myself or with a crew is still up in the air. The great thing about the work I do is that 90 percent of my services can be done remotely so that means I can grow into every facet of the Cape and surrounding area, and I think that’s really what I’m concentrating on right now.

Amplify: What advice would you give to future entrepreneurs?

Jenn: Know what you are capable of and push back the fear. I doubted myself 110 percent at first, but on some levels, I knew I had the skills - I just needed to find the courage to market myself. Once you get passed the fear, you need to also have a plan. Know your budget and don’t go into anything blind. Look into the resources around you and take advantage of them. Every business starts as a small business and as long as you are passionate about what you do, you can succeed. I don’t even feel like I work anymore because I do what I love.
