Amplify: What does House of Karina offer?

Kayla Gomes: We offer health, beauty, skin care, clothes, wigs, lashes, nails, jewelry and accessories. We’re here to serve customers with integrity by being loyal to them, the company, and ourselves. We consistently provide superior customer service with a relentlessly happy attitude, while standing within an affordable budget for families. Our wigs are all heat resistant and range form $100-$200 or $800-$1000, depending on whether you want synthetic or natural hair.

We’re also putting together beauty packages where you can schedule an appointment and chose what you want done: hair, makeup, nails, etc… and we can provide a whole glamour photography session afterwards.

Amplify: What inspired you to start this type of business?

Kayla Gomes: It’s always been in my nature to help other people feel beautiful and empowered. I was bullied a lot in school. My given name is Kayla; Karina is my alter ego.

When I throw a nice outfit and some heels on, and a wig with accessories, and do my makeup and get all glammed up, I feel like I can take on the world and no one can stop me. That’s how Karina came to be. She’s that badass female who gets whatever she wants in life and who no one can mess with. And that’s the attitude I want all of my customers to leave my shop with. We can all be Karina, no matter your gender.

Amplify: How did you start House of Karina? And have you encountered any obstacles along the way?

Kayla Gomes: I started in my mother’s shop. She owns One of a Kind Wigs in Falmouth. But I always dreamed of having my own location. So when we all got that stimulus money, I branched out and got my own location in Hyannis and House of Karina was born.

I’m like a therapist/stylist! People felt comfortable venting about their lives while I worked my magic on them and helped them feel better about themselves. It’s a beautiful thing helping them transform into the beautiful butterflies we’re all meant to be. People tell me all the time that I inspire them, which blows my mind but it inspires me to keep inspiring them!

I’m a single mother who’s been through hell and back. I’ve done a lot of work in the recovery field and have carried over that same mentality in my approach with my House of Karina clients. We all have unhealed trauma that makes us feel insecure. I love to remind people they are worthy of love and beauty for themselves and in their lives.

Unfortunately due to the economic stress of the pandemic, I wasn’t able to keep my shop open long. Now I sell good-quality items on Facebook and will be launching my web site soon. My goal is to raise $20,000 to open up another shop soon. I already have another location in mind.

Amplify: Where do you see your business in five years?

Kayla Gomes: I see myself running a successful and thriving shop in my own location again, while still selling online. Beautifying and empowering people always. -- Tara Vargas Wallace
