Crishana Wright is an African American immigrant from Old Harbor, St Catherine in Jamaica, who moved to Cape Cod four years ago. In 2019 Crishana was preparing for her wedding but to her surprise, there wasn’t an ethnic stylist available on the Cape that could provide the service she wanted. Living through that experience and also being a licensed cosmetologist since 2017, Crishana decided to start her own business, while attending 4C’s as a Criminal Justice major. Not knowing where the journey would take her, she started to do hair in her living room. Just like that with word of mouth her business started to grow. Then she realized with the number of clients she was getting she now needed an official space to do her business. That is the magic and how Beauty By Crishana started.

Beauty By Crishana is now a licensed LLC in the state of Massachusetts sine 2021. Specializing in cornrows(for men, women and children), braids of all styles, custom wig installment (styling), crochet styles, sew-ins and natural hair styles. Crishana also makes her own special hair oils. Clients must book their appointment via her booking site and come prepared with clean and already blown out hair for styling. Through hard work and dedication, Crishana was able to fund and support her business from her personal account and whatever money she made from doing hair. She was denied loans because of being a new business that didn’t have a track record to show a business credit history.

The biggest struggle Crishana said she faced was definitely funding. Not being able to deliver her dreams how she planned was a bit disappointing but also showed her that time and patience works better. Another struggle was trying to figure out the business aspect of how to get licensed. What services she can or cannot provide in a certain space, with town guidelines. “Information should be readily available or accessible without having to jump through so many hoops “,she stated. When asked what mistakes did she make, Crishana stated that she wished she had registered her business sooner and open a business account and not waited until she had registered the business to open the account. “Nothing isn’t really a mistake in my eyes, but learning points to take notes and proceed differently next time around”.

With Gods willing in the next 5 years Beauty By Crishana will have be an independent store front offering luxury services (pampering, wine, fruit, charcuterie board) and hopefully a secondary location as well in the Boston area. Providing services for all ethnicities. Providing jobs (hiring stylist who specializes in different techniques and hair texture). Venturing more in wigs( starting her own wig line) and their customizing for the idea client, especially those suffering from hair lost.  

Crishana’s advice to any and every business owner or aspiring business owner is to stay consistent. No matter how hard it gets never give up, where there is a will there is a way. Nothing good comes without a fight. Remember to also rest nothing is wrong with taking a day off to maintain your sanity and health.
