Amplify POC Cape Cod
Amar Rambhadjan -- professionally known as “Breezy” -- is a long-time music lover, a driven entrepreneur, and the CEO of Breezy Beats LLC. Breezy Beats creates high-quality instrumentals, beats, and background tracks for artists.
“We offer a whole lot of services for the local community, including recording, mixing/ mastering, video production… All of the things that an up-and-coming developing artist will need to start their career and create music. “
Originally from the Dutch side of St. Martin — one of the smallest islands in the northeastern Caribbean sea and divided into Dutch and French areas, Amar shares that island music was ever-present energy.
“I always had a passion for music. Where I come from, music was just a part of everyday life. Anywhere you go, there’s music playing in the background. The culture is so driven by the sound.”
Amar moved with his family to Cape Cod when he was 13. The move was difficult at first: “It was wild. At 13 you're getting ready to have a social life. Then all of a sudden, all my friends and everything I knew had changed. I definitely had to adjust. But being from the Caribbean, everyone eventually moves off the island to seek bigger opportunities. It was just something that was supposed to happen anyway.”
Amar played basketball for Dennis/Yarmouth High School before realizing he was “too awkward to be an athlete. I’m more useful in the studio.”
While Amar enjoyed listening to music, vibing to the sounds of the moment, he initially wasn’t sure he could make his own: "I thought it would be cool if I could create my own stuff, but I was never trained. I never had a piano class or had any instruments growing up, so I never thought it was for me."
Everything changed when he discovered Belgian digital audio workstation software called FL Studios: “I was just messing around with it and discovered: This is kinda cool, I might have something here. And it developed into a full-blown passion for making music.”
A passion he has followed to success. Amar was one of several entrepreneurs selected to receive seed money from the Fall 2020 Cohort of EforAll Cape Cod. He spoke with Amplify’s Tamora Israel.
Amplify: Who has been the most influential person in your music career?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: You know, my family has been a big support in whatever I do. My dad, I’m a lot like him. He really likes music. When he was coming up he used to DJ and collect records. When he noticed I had a passion for music, he helped me. The FL studio program was on his computer. He kinda nudged me towards that and It’s worked out. I would say my dad is a big supporter of mine.
Amplify: What does Breezy Beats offer? What can people look forward to when they come to your business?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: We offer all the things an up-and-coming developing artist will need to start their career and create music. We offer high-quality instrumentals, beats, and background tracks — whether artists want to record themselves rapping or singing. We provide all the production and background tracks. As far as the studio goes, we offer a whole lot of services for the local community, including recording, mixing/ mastering, video production — we’re going to have a lot of video production for marketing artists. After doing this for a couple of years I really wanted to open my own recording studio. I’m in the process of doing that right now and we’re gonna open a studio in Orleans MA. We’re calling it Breezy Studios, naturally, but the company is Breezy Beats.
Amplify: When do you think Breezy Beats will open in Orleans?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: We got a target date of June 15. Right now as we speak we’re building acoustic panels. We’re going crazy in here. It’s been like that for the past six months. It’s a lot of work, like more than I can imagine. But there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. It’s coming together, so June 15th is our goal.
Amplify: How did you go about starting your business? What steps did you take?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: One day I posted my tracks online, just to get feedback, to see what people would say. Before I knew it, people were contacting me asking me, how much, I didn’t even know what they were talking about. They were like, how much for the beat? I was like, oh, you want to purchase it? I had no clue what to charge or anything like that. But I did a quick Google search and looked up what other people were doing and I charged him like $20 or something. That was pretty much the day my business was started.
Amplify: When did you start Breezy Beats?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: It’s kind of a blur. I was already putting stuff out there in the world. I’ve been active since I was like 15 or 16. I was creating stuff in high school and I graduated in 2011.
Amplify: What obstacles have you encountered on the way to building your business?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: Oh man, life. Life just happens. There’s not a lot of people out here who were into the same thing I was doing. So It was difficult trying to learn as you go. I lost things in the studio, my hard drive failed on me a few times. Just trying to keep things organized was a struggle for me. But that’s just something you grow and learn. Every day is a struggle but you just gotta learn how to keep going with it. So far, I learned that an obstacle is just a lesson, it’s just an opportunity to learn something so you can push forward. I embrace when I go through a difficult time in a business. 'Cause at the end of it, it makes me stronger and I learn from it.
Amplify: How has Covid-19 and the country's financial climate affected your business?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: It affected me a bit, mostly because I was trying to open a studio. People can’t gather in small places anymore but at the same time, I saw it as an opportunity. I’m taking a risk here to invest and do this whole thing with the hopes that when everything reopens, people will be eager to come out and make music. For the Beats side, things have actually gotten a little better. I guess cause people are home all the time they're more inclined to be creative and do something with their time. So the beat sales have been doing ok.
Amplify: What advice would you give an up-and-coming producer who wants to do what you're doing right now?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: Just start. I wish I had. Recognize that consistency is everything. Even if you’re feeling like you're not ready, you just gotta go do it because the longer you wait, the more opportunities are passing you by. I learned that the hard way. Now I take every day and I just dedicate it to learning something. Learning something about business, learning something about music creation. And just keep yourself on point. Definitely try to build a network around you of people with similar hobbies and passions. Those are the people that are gonna push you in the right direction.
Amplify: Where do you see your business in five years?
Amar “Breezy” Rambhadjan: Five-year plan? I’m hoping that the studio does well. I’m hoping that we can sign a few artists and help them do well, help them get somewhere in their career. I want to really start to take the role of a teacher. I want to help up-and-coming people in the music industry. I’m trying to build and collaborate with people. In five years, I hope we’ll be bigger and better than ever.
